Enhancing Firefighter Health Through Improved Fire Station Design
MKThink Partners with SFFD and IAFF to Tackle Cancer Risks in Firefighters
San Francisco, CA - 1/30/2025
Problem to Solve:
How do variations in fire station design, air quality, and space utilization correlate with cancer risks among firefighters?
Study Overview
The MKThink-led study, launching in January 2025 and running through April 2025, will measure the relationship between air quality and health risks for firefighters. Through environmental sensors and spatial analysis, the study will assess pollutant exposure and validate interventions designed to improve IEQ. One station will serve as a control site, while the other will test an industrial-grade air purification system in high-risk areas such as vehicle bays.
Study Goals and Interventions
Assess the relationship between pollutants like PM2.5, VOCs, and formaldehyde and firefighter health risks.
Implement and test a low-cost, industrial-grade air purification system to reduce airborne pollutants.
Develop a standardized, scalable framework to prioritize stations most in need of intervention based on pollutant data and spatial usage.
"Cancer is the leading cause of death among firefighters, and we must act decisively to address the environmental hazards they face," said [MATT]. "This study represents a significant step forward in creating healthier fire stations and protecting the lives of those on the front lines."
Impact and Scale
The pilot phase, funded by MKThink, will serve as a model for expansion to 20, 50, and ultimately 100 stations across the San Francisco Bay Area, establishing a regional health-monitoring network to drive improvements nationwide.
"This study will set a new standard for prioritizing fire station upgrades that directly improve firefighter health," added Mark, Founder and Chairperson of MKthink. "Our goal is to not only reduce cancer risks but also ensure that resources are directed where they’re needed most."
