Los Angeles Fires and the Vital Role of Firefighter Safety

As wildfires rage across Los Angeles, the valiant efforts of our firefighters remind us of the immense risks they face every day—not just from the blazes but also from the environments where they rest, recharge, and prepare for their next call. Amid this reality, a growing concern is their heightened cancer risk, an issue that demands immediate attention.

The Hidden Danger: Cancer Risks for Firefighters in their Stations

Firefighters experience a 14% higher risk of cancer compared to the general population, with occupational cancer accounting for 72% of 2023 line-of-duty deaths among International Association of Fire Fighters members [1][2][3][4] [5]. This alarming statistic underscores the dangers firefighters face, not only on the front lines but also within the confines of their own fire stations. Constant exposure to diesel exhaust, particulate matter, and other hazardous pollutants poses significant health risks. Although efforts are underway to implement safety measures such as exhaust reduction systems, along with improved protocols and policies, definitive, data-driven solutions are still urgently needed to ensure their safety within the station environment.

MKThink’s Study: Designing Safer Fire Stations

Recognizing this critical need, MKThink has partnered with the San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD) to explore how fire station design can mitigate these risks. The study, Critical Places: Mitigating Cancer Risks and Enhancing Efficiency in Fire Stations with Spatial Intelligence, evaluates how environmental design and indoor quality impact firefighter health. By leveraging spatial intelligence, the initiative aims to redesign fire stations to reduce pollutant exposure, avoid costly overhauls, and enhance safety.

If you are in the San Francisco area, join us for our event "Leveraging Spatial Intelligence to Enhance Firefighter Health," to hear from lead voices in firefighter health and spatial intelligence.

A Statewide Opportunity for Change

As fire seasons grow more severe, the demands on firefighters will only increase. Protecting them means ensuring not only better equipment and training but also healthier environments, starting with their fire stations.

MKThink’s work demonstrates how strategic design can address systemic issues like cancer risk while supporting long-term resilience for firefighters and their communities. As California continues to face the impacts of climate change, scalable solutions like this will be essential.

By safeguarding firefighters in every aspect of their lives—from the fires they fight to the spaces where they recover—we can honor their service and ensure they are ready to meet the challenges ahead.

How You Can Support Firefighters Today

While solutions like those proposed by MKThink will take time to implement, there are immediate ways to support firefighters on the frontlines in Los Angeles:

  • Donate to firefighter relief funds to provide essential supplies and mental health support.

  • Advocate for investments in better protective equipment and station upgrades.

  • Raise awareness about firefighters' risks and the importance of safe working environments.
