Empowering Learning Environments: Reducing Energy Costs and Improving Air Quality
Reduction of energy consumption at Hawai'i's Title 1 schools
ABSTRACT
In Hawaii, where keeping classrooms cool and comfortable is essential for student well-being, the U.S. Department of Energy’s "Efficient and Healthy Schools Campaign" is making a difference. This campaign led by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and MKThink aims to evaluate potential state-wide energy savings and indoor air quality (IAQ) impacts. At August Ahrens Elementary, the state’s highest electricity consumer - $345,019 utility cost in 2022, a focused effort on retuning air conditioning units and upgrading control systems revealed that many cooling units underperform, leaving students in less-than-ideal conditions while raising utility costs. Additionally, Hawaiʻi’s school facilities were found to be in poorer condition compared to mainland schools. In response, a $5 million initiative is recommended to retune AC systems across the state, ensuring students can learn in a healthier, more energy-efficient environment. The results of this project have the potential to improve energy use and comfort in all 258 of Hawaiʻi’s public schools
